Call for Contributions

Submissions of papers are solicited for the 1st International Workshop on Software Engineering for Startups (SoftStart 2017), to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina on the 23rd of May 2017 in conjunction with the 39th International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE 2017).

Most software engineering processes have been developed to address the needs of established organizations. However, these organizations are being outnumbered by startups, characterized by small teams trying to bring a product or service to market quickly with limited resources. Startups rarely use software engineering practices–even modern, light-weight ones–beyond the bare minimum. When a startup is able to launch its product and attract clients, the need for defined business and development processes rapidly becomes acute, reflecting the growing complexity of the offering and the company. Beyond this initial phase, the relevance and applicability of central software engineering concepts emerge and evolve in a context-specific way.

This workshop aims at bringing together practitioners and researchers interested in and experienced with how the startup environment affects the practice of software engineering. We are in particular encouraging participation from those who have had direct involvement with software development in startups or studied and documented their software development practices and models. Our hope is that their insights will surface unique issues and effective strategies, as well as inspire researchers to study the practice of software engineering within the startup context to help address those issues.

Types of Submissions

To achieve the workshop objectives, we are soliciting three different kinds of contributions for SoftStart 2017:

  • Research Papers (max 7 pages): Submissions describing research activities in the area of software engineering for startups with concrete insights;
  • Experience Reports (max 4 pages): Submissions reflecting on experiences about software engineering processes, techniques, and best practices in startups. At least one of the authors must be have personal experience in a startup (successful or otherwise).
  • Position Papers (max 4 pages): Submissions declaring opinions, proposing discussion points, addressing controversial issues, offering explanations, or speculating on solutions related to software engineering for startups. Position papers must be single-authored and include the author’s biographical sketch. The themes covered by this workshop will include all the different aspects of software engineering for startups.


We welcome contributions on all aspects of software engineering for startups. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Software development processes, practices, and techniques in startups
  • Application of agile and lean development approaches in the startup context
  • Limitations of traditional and modern processes, practices, and techniques in the startup context
  • Software development culture in startups
  • Quality attributes in the startup context
  • Effective fast prototyping strategies for startups
  • Interactions among software engineering, product development, and business processes in startups
  • Case studies and other empirical studies pertaining to software engineering and development in startups
  • Software development automation, tools, and infrastructure suitable for startups
  • Education and training for software development in startups
  • Economics of software development in startups
  • Software process strategy and improvement for startups
  • Impact of limited funding on the development process
  • Responding to evolving product requirements from stakeholders, including potential customers and investors

Submission Instructions

We invite Research Papers, Experience Reports, and Position Papers that address the workshop objectives. Outside-the-box thinking is welcome. 

Submissions must be in English and follow the ICSE conference proceedings format as specified here.  Please review ICSE 2017 formatting and submission guidelines for further guidance.

All submissions should be submitted electronically through the online submission system.

Publication and Proceedings

Accepted contributions will appear in the ICSE 2017 companion volume that includes workshop proceedings and be published in both the ACM Digital Library and the IEEE Digital Library.

The official publication date of the workshop proceedings is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of ICSE 2017. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work.
